In the United States, the stock market symbol is only made up of letters and sometimes the symbol has a period before the last letter to show that the class of the share. For example the symbol for Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. is BRK and when the symbol is BRK.B, it shows the class B share of the company.
The stock market symbol can differ slightly depending on the exchange where the stock is being traded. For example, stocks that are traded on the NASDAQ are either four or five letters. While the stocks that are traded on the New York Stock Exchange are three, two or one letters.
One letter symbols are the most sought after by companies that have their stock on the stock market. This is because it allows the company to have a unique and easy recognition. For instance, AT&T is one the oldest companies on the New York Stock Exchange. Dealers, brokers and investors know the company through its popular symbol T. When AT&T was purchased by SBC, the merged company started using the same symbol as it was well known across the stock market.
It is the symbol that is used to write orders for shares when investors want to buy and sell shares for a particular company.
